The New Meaning of “Home”

COVID dramatically changed how homeowners in Northeast Ohio and nationwide think about and use their homes. The America At Home study identified a “paradigm shift with homeowners’ attitudes, lifestyles, design preferences, and purchasing decisions.” The study was conducted in three phases, at the start of the pandemic, in the middle, and at the end. The study revealed key insights into how Americans and homeowners view their homes, including the primary features most wanted and needed.

Emotional well-being was the most important concern of survey respondents, followed by financial well-being, mental health, and physical health and fitness. Homeowners want their living spaces to provide comfort, security, relaxation, reflection, and a gathering space for the family. Common requests K&B designers receive are in direct alignment with the study findings, placing importance on key design solution areas:

  1. Technologies that improve conveniences and add touches of luxury

  2. Energy efficiencies

  3. Increased storage

  4. Better flow and functionality
